Stormwater runoff often causes contamination of surface water bodies. The Living Systems Laboratory (LSL) is a series of natural processes that treats water from the Blackstone Canal. This project evaluated the capacity of this system to treat stormwater. Flowrates were measured and lab analyses were performed on water samples collected from the LSL and surrounding water bodies to determine treatment efficiency. Design of the current system was evaluated and recommendations were provided for increasing the capacity of the LSL

Attitudes of Air Pollution from Commercial Aircraft: A Comparison between Cultures and Genders

Studies have focused on cultural and gender differences based on perceptions of air pollution. Although these studies provided valuable information on cultural and gender differences on perceptions of air pollution, there have not been studies conducted regarding consumer’s perceptions on air pollution from commercial aircraft and their willingness to fly. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine how varying pollution levels influenced participant’s willingness to fly across two nationalities and genders. In the study, five hundred and ninety-nine participants from India and the United States answered questions related to their attitudes toward flying on an aircraft emitting air pollution that is above the industry average, at the industry average, and below the industry average. The current study utilized a valid and reliable measure of passenger’s willingness to fly. The results demonstrate that there are differences between cultures and genders based on their willingness to fly on an aircraft based on the amount of air pollution emitted. It is also important for those to know what the effects of air pollution are on the environment. Many people do not understand how much air pollution is released from an aircraft, which can therefore cause people to have a neutral opinion on air pollution from aircraft. This study examined in detail the effects of air pollution from commercial aircraft and the opinions and perceptions of those from a collectivistic culture and an individualistic culture. While a person’s culture can shape and mold their opinions and beliefs, ones gender can also play a role on ones attitudes. This study examined the difference in attitudes on the environment between males and females. The findings from this study could provide valuable information to aircraft manufacturers, airlines, and aircraft operators as to consumer’s views toward aircraft pollution. Finally, theoretical and practical implications of these results are discussed

This study has resulted in Georgia Now and Forever initiative, an ambitious undertaking to educate key decision-makers across Georgia as to the study's findings with a message that intentional, thoughtful decisions around use of Georgia's remaining undeveloped land are inextricably linked to Georgia's future ecological and economic sustainability. Unsurprisingly, but important to have clearly documented, is the role low density development has played in the significant acreage conversion from agricultural land, forested land, and wetlands. These findings from past development patterns have allowed for the identification of plausible future landcover change trends, assuming business-as-usual development approaches. North Georgia is clearly in the path of major landcover change to low density developed land as metro Atlanta proceeds to "move" northward. This is also an area of significant ecological and carbon assets in the form of our mountain and valley forests, as well as agricultural lands. There is keen community interest in welcoming development-especially diverse and affordable housing choices-but alongside serious advancement in the conservation of the natural landscape. Representatives from the Habersham County, the City of Clarkesville and the property manager of a large conservation tract in the area that includes two riverfront miles of the Soquee River requested assistance from the Georgia Conservancy and Georgia Tech to consider how and where development and conservation can and should occur across their home county of Habersham. There is an understanding among this group that the very conditions that draw new residents to the area-the forests, mountains, streams-are at risk without a concerted effort to include conservation alongside land-efficient development. Given the larger situation in Georgia, the public and political will in the Clarkesville/Habersham area to pursue a larger joint development and conservation priority led to this planning process of identifying strategies for managing local resources in a sustainable way.Habersham CountyCity of Clarksvill

Speaking up: using OSTEs to understand how medical students address professionalism lapses

    Get PDF
Background: Objective-structured teaching encounters (OSTEs) are used across many disciplines to assess teaching ability. The OSTE detailed in this paper assesses 191 fourth-year medical students’ (M4) ability to identify and address lapses in professionalism based on Association of American Medical Colleges’ professionalism competencies. The research questions addressed are: How frequently do M4s address professionalism lapses observed during an OSTE? What factors influence whether M4s provide feedback when they observe professionalism lapses in an OSTE? Methods: Standardized patients (SPs) and standardized learners (SLs) were recruited and trained to participate in a standardized encounter with specific cognitive, social, and behavioral errors, including professionalism lapses. M4s viewed this encounter and then offered feedback to the SL, while remotely observed by faculty. Post-encounter, the SL and faculty completed identical checklists to assess both teaching readiness and ability to address professionalism concerns. Results: An analysis of frequencies showed that six of the Association of American Medical Colleges’ nine professional competencies were addressed in the checklist and/or discussed in the focus group. Analysis of transcribed debriefing sessions confirmed that M4s did not consistently address professionalism lapses by their peers. Conclusions: In focus groups, M4s indicated that, while they noticed professionalism issues, they were uncomfortable discussing them with the SLs. Findings of the current study suggest how medical educators might support learners’ ability to address lapses in professionalism as well as topics for future research

Dear Mr. Ellis: At your request we have reviewed the 2013 Ten-Year Site Plans ofthe electric utilities. The Department of Economic Opportunity's review focused on potential sites for future power generation, and the compatibility of those sites with the applicable local comprehensive plan, including the adopted future land use map, adjacent land uses, and natural resources on or adjacent to the potential sites. Our review ofthe 2013 Ten-Year Site Plans addressed ten potential power plant sites identified in the Ten-Year Site Plans ofthe following utilities: Florida Power & Light Company, Gulf Power Company, and Seminole Electric Cooperative. None of the potential sites were found to be incompatible with the applicable local comprehensive plan. Should you have any questions regarding these comments, please call Scott Rogers

The detection of hate speech and stereotypes in online platforms has gained significant attention in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). Among various forms of discrimination, LGBTQ+ phobia is prevalent on social media, particularly on platforms like Twitter. The objective of the HOMO-MEX task is to encourage the development of NLP systems that can detect and classify LGBTQ+ phobic content in Spanish tweets, regardless of whether it is expressed aggressively or subtly. The task aims to address the lack of dedicated resources for LGBTQ+ phobia detection in Spanish Twitter and encourages participants to employ multi-label classification approaches. This paper has been supported by PAPIIT projects IT100822, TA101722, and CONAHCYT CF-2023-G-64.
